If you are heading to Orlando the week of September 24 for ISA Automation Week, then I have just the exhibit you should check out. If you have not yet decided, then perhaps checking this out will get you to the event.

The Open O&M Group is sponsoring a demonstration of data interoperability from the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) function through construction and ultimately to operations and maintenance functions. This demonstration is the culmination of several years worth of work on the part of owner/operators and other engineers.

The demonstration will be the design, construction (virtually), operation and maintenance of a debutanizer. The three major design suppliers–Aveva, Bentley and Intergraph–are all on board with the project. Worley Parsons is the EPC designing the project. The project is being run the same way a “real” industrial project would be run.

The benefit you will all see if all this work comes to fruition will be improved maintenance response. Owner/operators will be able to get up-to-date P&IDs with truly digital links to the actual equipment specifications. When a pump or motor goes down in the middle of the night, a technician would be able to call up the information on a computer and drill right down to the model and spare parts list in order to get a replacement or repair much more quickly.

I’ll be there on Tuesday that week documenting the progress.
