Manufacturing and Industrial Videos and Podcast

While I was at Dell World last fall, Dell Chief Research Officer Shawn Rogers interviewed me on Internet of Things. The video has been posted.

Meanwhile I have recorded a YouTube video report from the recent ARC Forum. I made a podcast of the recording for those who download from iTunes and listen while driving or exercising.

As I stated in the video and podcast information, “Gary reports from Orlando at the ARC Advisory Group 20th Annual Industry Forum. No surprises that Internet of Things and cyber security were headliners. The real surprise was the amount of Keynote space president Andy Chatha gave to an ExxonMobil initiative of engaging Lockheed Martin to essentially drive an open-specification DCS. Reception by technology suppliers was lukewarm at best. Reception by peers was difficult to gauge because so few were in attendance. But the conversations were intense.

Enjoy.

Machine Control Questions and Technology News

Machine Control Questions and Technology News

Machine Tool Controls

I’m returning to my roots with machine automation for a study on machine tool controls. I’d love to trade emails or chat with any of you who have any insight into CNC, servos, and other machine control systems.

Technology News Sources

I listen to a variety of podcasts when I work out or drive around town. One of my favorites for the past few years was Tekzilla. But its parent company sold and the new company shut down everything. (Why buy?)

Well, Patrick Norton and Shannon Morse are back with a video podcast that is a quick roundup of the latest tech news and some tips to make your tech work. Going out on their own, they are self-funding TekThing through Patreon. Another interesting idea to get good content published without the overhead and grief of selling advertising. Check it out and consider contributing.

Industrial Internet of Things

ARC Advisory Group is in the midst of a survey on manufacturer/producer interest in the Industrial Internet of Things.

Similar to most other surveys I’ve seen there is a lot of wait-and-see. Its preliminary results based on a population of only 38 reveal half are watching and considering, but actually doing nothing. Another 6 have no idea what IIoT is. That leaves about a third—about 14—who are actually doing something with IIoT.

It is early days in the buzz word part of IIoT, but we also know that many, if not most, companies who have HART are not using the digital diagnostics part of the network. So we have a ways to go.

2015 ARC Industry Forum

2015 ARC Industry Forum

It is time to start thinking about the annual ARC Industry Forum. I’ve attended every one beginning in 1998. It is a major industry gathering. It is largely about ARC’s clients, but the only industry people I don’t see in Orlando are competing analysts. A good place to see and be seen as they say.

ARC Advisory Group has announced the keynote presenters for its 19th Annual Industry Forum in Orlando, Florida, February 9-12, 2015. These include: Peter Holicki, Corp. Vice President, Manufacturing & Engineering and Environment, Health & Safety at Dow Chemical; Gregory Touhill, Deputy Asst. Secretary, Cyber Security Operations & Programs at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; and Stephan Biller, Chief Manufacturing Scientist at General Electric.

These keynote presenters and a large number of other distinguished engineering, IT, and operations executives will share concepts, approaches, and success stories that address the forum theme: Industry in Transition: The Information Driven Enterprise for the Connected World. The event will address top-of-mind concerns about the impact of new business models and disruptive, IT-based technologies on energy companies, manufacturers, and other industrial organizations.

In -depth workshops include cyber security, developing the future workforce, sustainable reliability, and the Industrial Internet of Things.

Individual forum sessions

  • Reducing the cost and duration of capital projects
  • Creating and sustaining a proactive maintenance culture
  • Gaining value from predictive analytics
  • Approaches for integrated control and electrification
  • Enterprise recipe management
  • Asset performance management (APM)
  • Building a secure-by-design Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
  • Future directions for process automation systems

  • Best practices for selecting technology and partners for greenfield and brownfield projects
  • Workforce improvement through targeted training
  • Enterprise manufacturing intelligence (EMI)
  • Remote monitoring and diagnostics
  • Machines as a service enabler
  • Leveraging smart field systems

Forum attendees will learn about field-proven processes and techniques that are helping improve quality, performance, and agility at leading manufacturers and other industrial organizations around the world. As always, there will also be ample opportunities for attendees to network and socialize with their peers over the course of the four-day event.

ARC Industry Forum 2014 Information Posted

ConferenceGear up now for the annual gathering of automation industry insiders. I intend to be there–see you in Florida.

ARC Advisory Group announces the agenda for its Industry Forum 2014 in Orlando, Florida, February 10-13. This event, “Industry in Transition: The Information Driven Enterprise,” will feature 11 programs and 36 sessions focused on exploring the latest industry trends and hottest new technologies.

The tale as told in the press release:

New information technologies such as cloud computing, mobility, social technologies, Internet of Things, big data/analytics, and 3D visualization have been getting a lot of attention in the industrial community as each has the potential to disrupt and radically change the way companies do business. Still, most industrial enterprises tend to be conservative and slow to embrace new information technologies. The agenda for this year’s forum will continue to explore what works and highlight the successes of leading organizations for the benefit of all.

New industry solutions will be on display at the Innovations Showcase. The Showcase provides an excellent opportunity for executives to assess the potential for emerging applications in production management, interoperability, virtual manufacturing, process improvement, asset management, operations management, supply chain synchronization, and more. Application scenarios will enable attendees to see how these emerging technologies can be applied to help solve issues across all industries.

Several speaking slots are still available. For information on nominating a speaker for the forum, please visit our Speaker Opportunities page.
